[WIP] Flixel Dungeon
« on: Sat, Jun 19, 2010 »
Hi there,

I have recently finished a first draft of a top-down dungeon crawler with 360 rotation, multiple enemies and rooms with the working title of Flixel Dungeon.

I have uploaded it to the dojo http://flashgamedojo.com/u/8w6rwz/

Please have a go and let me know what you think.  Comments on the controls, improvements and bugs are encouraged.

I will also be expanding on this with more levels, enemies and hopefully items with an aim to release it on some Flash game websites.

If you are a pixel artist or know one who would like to work with me on the tilesets and characters for this game please contact me as this is the only thing I can't do myself.

Thanks,
     Val

Pretty cool, I'd like to see it expanded.

As for the more constructive comments, controls could use some improvement (unless they are intentionally 'hard', in which case carry on). The problem I have now is that because of character slowly accelerating after key press it is hard to round corners as well as evade monsters.

You could also add some indication the direction the character is facing - I understand it is just a placeholder sprite, but just adding a 1px nose and a pair of 1px eyes at the front would be something.

So far I can't really tell the direction you're going in, but from your own words and the game itself my first guess would be a Diablo-like thing - in which case here's some stuff you might consider: bigger, randomly generated levels; enemy AI and variety in behaviour; exp grinding + simple stats; and much much more...

Good luck with the game, I'm waiting for updates.

Edit: maybe it's the square character but your game reminded me of Mega Monster Mania http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=9746.0

Quite cool, as biomechanic said, the controls could be improved. I think that increasing the drag on the charachter would clear that up though. This would definitely be a candidate for the pixel perfect hittesting that's been over in releases for a while, because it was odd being hurt by the frog-boss when the square wasn't actually touching him. Other than those, I'd recommend changing the background color to something like a floor, not bright green.

As a feature request, this would be really cool with some dynamic lighting, maybe not a complicated as this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s60AljUbpKY but something worth considering nonetheless.

Hey thank you for your feedback guys it has already helped me a lot.

I have implemented the Pixel Perfect code and hopefully made the controls more responsive.  It's funny, the more you test your own game the more blind you become to some things.

I can certainly see a few similarities with Mega Monster Mania, but then again dungeon crawling isn't the most original idea ever.

That dynamic lighting looks amazing.  Shame I'm not coding in Python with OpenGL!

As for which direction this game is going to go, I'm not sure yet.  Once I've polished off the fundamentals this will be the foundation for a bigger game.  What that game will play like, who knows.  Stay tuned for updates!

I'm still eager for more critique and any suggestions you have will be welcomed.

Granted, it doesn't look as good but it's possible to do dynamic light and shadow in flash to some degree. http://flixel.org/forums/index.php?topic=577.0

Hi lithander,

Thanks for the link, you game looks great.

I have updated Flixel Dungeon a bit and you can play it here: http://flashgamedojo.com/u/j0yp3v/

The main improvements are better controls, a few sounds and A* pathfinding on the flame enemies courtesy of Vexhel's FlxPathfinding: http://flixel.org/forums/index.php?topic=1514.0

I hope you enjoy it.  As usual any feedback would be most welcome.

Looks like you've also added pixel perfect collision on the boss. Nice.

The controls are a bit better but still not responsive enough. Maybe you could drop the acceleration and just switch velocity between 0 and max. Or keep acceleration but set start velocity to a fracion of max (1/2? 3/5? test and see) immediately after pressing the button.

Really cool!
I think the only bad thing i noticed at the game at all -despites the graphics, self explained- are the controls, i thought it to hard, but its a challenge, what makes things great on a game, probably.
I'm not pro at graphics, and i have my own kinda cutie style doing it, we could talk about it and see if i can help.

Also, i'm musician, if you want soundtracking and sounddesigning for the game, call me :)
