I Need Help With Flixel Badly.
« on: Thu, Oct 14, 2010 »
I'm completely new to coding with AS3 and Flixel. I'm pretty much in the dark here and have been trying to find tutorials to help walk me through how the engine works, what the commands do, and how the Flixel library ties in and helps me out.

Ever guide I read is either out of date, using a different compiler (I'm using FlshDevelop), or just plain not working out Can anyone help me? I tried to find the tutorial on here but it says that even that is out of date.

This is getting very frustrating as I want to progress but I seem unable to even learn the basics. I've managed to do a simple hello world but I want to get beyond that and I can't find any good tutorials that go beyond that - they either don't work or are poorly worded and hastily written.

If anyone can help please do I'm frustrated and I really want to learn this.

Once again I'm using FlashDevelop and Flixel.

I was sent to this library via http://flashgamedojo.com/go/

If you've can make a "hello world", and you've got the wiki, you should be fine (http://flashgamedojo.com/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Flixel).

Tutorials are pretty lousy things to rely on to learn, better to get some objectives; specific questions to search for, or to ask here.

ie "how do load a graphic into the game" "how to I make things respond to arrow keys", etc.

After I got my feet wet with tutorials, I learned more from searching these forums then anywhere else. Try using the search function for something specific and if that doesn't yield results, don't be afraid to ask. We're all friends here.

That said, here's a tutorial for installing on getting everything setup right: http://flashgamedojo.com/wiki/index.php?title=Installing_FlashDevelop

Here's a tutorial for the FlashDevelop Hello World: http://flashgamedojo.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hello_World_-_FlashDevelop_%28Flixel%29

That is very sound advice Mr. Ocias.  When I first picked up Flixel I spent about two weeks playing around in Mode.

I think most of us did that at first.  There tons of little mods floating around.  People creating grenades.  It was all every exciting.

I then took two more weeks to build my own LITTLE game out of mode and what I learned from it.

That was the BIGGEST learning experience.

I would focus on these things:

Day 1:

1. Learn how to scale the screen ,set the resolution and change the background color.

2. Figure out the animation and embedding functions.  That is a pretty big deal.  Get a good handle on what is being done there.  Just try adding a frame to the players animation, or make it so he can duck ( just visually - don't try to go too crazy yet ).

Day 2:

1. Try messing the with behavior of the enemies and player.  Learn and understand what all the different movement variables do.  This is huge!

2. Play with FlxG.elapsed.  Understand what this is doing, and how to use this to create a timer.

3. Play with the FlxG.flash and fade.

4. Mess with the sounds a little.  Scratch the surface here a bit.

Day 3.

1.  Kinda wrap your head around FlxGroups.  These puppies are kinda important.  Think about them as arrays that displays.  :)  Something like that.

2. If you have a concept at all of FlxGroups start looking at the collision and overlap functions, and look at the objects in the game to see what the do, and play with making them do different things!  Try to make something bounce!

Day 4 -

1.  Get a good handle on how to add things to a state via a FlxGroup.  At least know how to replicate adding reseting classes and objects.   Figure out how to add your own FlxSprite or text to the game.  This where you start really customizing a game!

Rest of your life

Keep playing around until you can make a very simple game!  Do something TINY as hell.  Play around with the little things you learn, and be ready to get frustrated.

Any time you learn something new, move to a new town, have a new experience it is going to have some frustration or anxiety involved.  Don't get sucked into it.  Just understand it will change as you change, and be patient with yourself.

People do want to see what you can make!

The biggest problem I think I'm having right now is finding mode.

I've looked for it and I can't seem to locate it anywhere! What dies it come bundled with again?

I've had trouble trying to get the latest Flex SDK from adobe because their source site has been down for about 2 weeks straight now. I had to google and find a version -  I think I have version 4.1 of the SDK.

I'm pretty sure I've got FlashDev and Flixel installed properly. I managed to get hello world working and even print the text out into a flash box. I know the basics of understanding coding I just think I'm not sure how exactly to read and use the flixel library.

I feel like treating it as an engine but I know it is just a library and I guess I"m not sure how to use that library.

You can find Mode here: http://github.com/AdamAtomic/Mode

Here's a tutorial for a defender style game: http://www.creativeapplications.net/flash/flixel-2-tutorial-flash-tutorials-games/ and then my tutorial built directly off it showing how to add different weapons, powerups, and HUD: http://www.omegastormproductions.com/uber-flash/flixel-2-tutorial-extended

Thanks, just getting a copy of mode will help me  a lot! The added links to tutorials should help me transition into it nicely.
