To give or not to give an achievement.
« on: Sat, Feb 19, 2011 »
Hi, I'm making a match-3 game where I give the player an achievement award for making a line of 5 items rather than the usual 3 but I'm finding that this award is being "achieved" quite often during cascades along with a couple of other achievements.

I'm questioning whether I should change it so that the player has to actually earn these awards and not just score them by chance.

If this were happening once in a blue moon I wouldn't care but with a 24x18 game board it's happening often and it seems kind of silly to move one chip and score 2 or 3 awards along with all the bonus points.

I don't play a lot of games ( I guess I should ) so I 'm not sure how this situation is normally handled.

I'm thinking I'll let them have the bonus points of course, but not the awards.

As a player would you feel cheated if you weren't given them under that circumstance?

If I completed the task the achievement specifies, but I didn't get it, I would assume it's a glitch. Just make harder achievements, or less of them...
