Flixel Iphone
« on: Mon, Sep 14, 2009 »
I'm considering porting Flixel over to the iPhone. Is this some thing that people would be interested in? If you are interested would you like to see this in C++ or Objective C?

I'm kinda leaning towards C++ right now because it would be a little more copy paste friendly between as3 than Objective C. Any thoughts or ideas on this matter would be appreciated.

I haven't started anything yet, just seeing if there is interest at this point in time.

Hells yes.

I would pay for a license to use Flixel on the iPhone. It certainly would give my plan to cross to iPhone development a jump start.

Yeah, an iPhone version of Flixel would definitely be eybrow-raise worthy :)

So we have an Objective C version of it kind of maybe halfway done or something?  I will definitely keep you guys posted on what happens with it!

Damn, I need to get myself a Mac Mini and an iPhone.

This is rad, I'll go with the C++ version myself.

I've been using Cocos2D to develop an iPhone application. It isn't a game, so Cocos2D will probably be all I need for my rookie attempt at iPhone development.

I would strongly suggest Objective-C. This isn't because I like Objective-C. (I don't) It is because Objective-C is structurally closer to Actionscript 3 than C++ is. C++ enables the ability to use OOP, but it isn't the most friendly envrionment for that kind of development. After learning some Objective-C, I would say that it has more in common with AS3 than C++ does. The biggest hurdle is the difference in the syntax. (Objective-C has some bizarre bracketed syntax)

I would definitely love to take Flixel for a spin on the iPhone. I've really enjoyed using Flixel in Flash, it makes getting most 2D games up-and-running much, much faster. (while still permitting acceptable flexibility in the design)

This is super good news! definately
Creating great game sprites is somewhat of a lost art these days. When we discovered ework, we were extremely impressed with their ability to transform creative concepts into cohesive animations. Partnering with ework has been a great experience!

Man I would gladly be a contributor / tutorial writer for flixel iPhone were it a C++ version.  I was first drawn to flixel because it was very similar to the As3 / iPhone C++ prototype engine I had built earlier this year.  I was STRONGLY considering just doing as straight a port of flixel to C++ in the coming weeks ( for use in December's Ludum Dare 16), so if somebody really wants to set this up I can make an SVN repo.  Seriously!

IMPORTANT THOUGH: Should it be called ixel or iflixel?!?

Dude, do it. C++ definitely though, Obj-C is an abomination, syntax-wise.

I think it should be called Flixel.  Box2D (another AS3 framework) is called "Box2D" on every platform it exists on....Flixel should always be called Flixel, because no matter the platform, it always does exactly the same thing. The only differences are in the way that specific platform handles the implementation.

Add me to the list of people that would pay for a license or gladly help contribute to an iphone port. I've made one game with cocos2d and would love to see flixel on that platform!
