Self-deprecation on the website
« on: Thu, Jul 14, 2011 »
I don't think it's doing Flixel any favors by being so self-deprecating at various places on the website.

Examples:

FlxInvaders: A shabby space invaders clone.
FlxTeroids: A shabby asteroids clone.
Mode: Silly demo game created for the first public release of flixel.

Thoughts?
Initials: Super Lemonade Factory, Super Lemonade Factory Part Two, Above The Clouds, Revvolvver, Four Chambers of the Human Heart

Those games are there for starters to dive in and start up with code in a relatively quick way, I think Flixel is a very newcomer friendly and that is one of it's strengths.  If the visitor is already experienced, and ready to dive into to more complicated builds, I don't think they would even notice those.  They would be searching for something entirely different such as optimization, abilities, flexibility, and speed etc of the engine.

That's my two pennies anyway...

I don't have any complaints with the starter samples either.  We could certainly benefit from some more impressive demos and easier access to impressive games made with flixel, but the features/overview section shows off quite a bit of what the engine can do already and the current samples are certainly enough to get people started.

I learned half of Flixel from studying Mode's code. I think that a simple game that doesn't overwhelm you with a crap-ton of code is a good thing to distribute as a tutorial game.

And Mode is a fun game besides being a demo. It's executed rather well.

I think you guys misunderstood what Initials meant.
Not the actual examples, but how they have been presented in the website. Here http://flixel.org/help.html

Thanks Osro, you're spot on.

On the website they are referred to as 'silly' and 'shabby'.
I think these games are anything but silly. Especially Mode, I think is actually an incredibly powerful test bed, a fun game, a class on procedural level generation, a pixel art master class and a million other things but definitely not silly.

To summarize, I don't think the website should refer to it's own examples as 'silly' or 'shabby'.

Oh I see!  That makes more sense!  I totally agree with that.

Ahh! 100% agree.  This really should be changed, I remember reading this and thinking... "really??".    My bad for not understanding at first.

To be fair, FlxTeroids and FlxInvaders ARE pretty shabby. And "silly" isn't even self-deprecating.
