How to make and store big levels
« on: Sat, May 31, 2014 »
I want to create runner, but not endless. And I have question about how to and where store and big levels. Big levels means, that runner have levels, and each level have 3-4 minutes game session, not like Canabalt where we have endless random generated levels. I make levels manually. Should I use Flash IDE for building levels, or use third-party level editor like DAME or OGMO.

I suggest using a level editor like DAME or OGMO.  Exporting to a csv keeps the level size small.  It's just a list of tile selections (ex: 1,0,0,0,1,2,etc), rather than a fully detailed level.

To avoid loading the entire level at the start, just load each column as needed.  By that I mean when a column of blocks goes off scream, kill it, and when the next column is coming into the frame, load it.

Definitely use a level editor. I like the Ogmo Editor.
