Title: Questions about iOS programing
Post by: camasthecat on Mon, Aug 29, 2011
Hi, I'm new here, and I have a few questions about Flixel-iOS.

 - For one thing, with flixel-based-iOS, is everything programed the same except the input? (Mouse and keyboard)

 - And is iOS a good place to start in flixel programing?

 - And finally, Is there a reason not that many people have made a flixel-based app?

 - Is it free to make an app in the appstore?

 - How is the app tested on a device?

Well, those are my main questions. If you could answer them, I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance!

No. Flixel iOS is written in Objective-C which is the native language for Apple products. You still have things such as FlxSprites, but it is not at all the same as Flixel in Flash

 - And is iOS a good place to start in flixel programing?

If you have experience in object orientated programming then yes it is.
If you don't, I would say you'll have a difficult time learning it, as opposed the flash version.

 - And finally, Is there a reason not that many people have made a flixel-based app?

There are a few out there. There is Connectrode. The is Mode. And there is Picking Up Chicks is Hard When Your Car is a BMX.

I wrote a post on why Flixel iOS isn't taking off a while ago on my blog.

A few reasons. There are more fuller featured engines out there. It costs money to start making apps for Apple. (Mac computer + iOS device + Apple Dev membership) it adds up quick.
- Is it free to make an app in the appstore?

No, you pay $99 to join the developer program.

- How is the app tested on a device?

Once you are in the dev program you build for the device once a provisioning profile is installed onto your device.

Well, those are my main questions. If you could answer them, I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance!

No worries.

Thanks initials.

Very helpful, yet rather disappointing.

I think I'll stick to flash. :D

Thanks again!

Is there any flixel ( or flash in general) apps on like, Steam?

Well there is VVVVVV, but I think that was made in Flash/Air then ported to C++ for Steam.
I'd say there are a lot of Flixel games on Kongregate but not on Steam.
